The rotavirus vaccine is an oral vaccine that protects infants and young children from severe diarrhea caused by the rotavirus infection, which is the leading cause of severe diarrhea in young children globally. It is safe, effective, and significantly reduces hospitalizations and deaths from rotavirus, although it may not provide complete protection against all infections. The vaccine is recommended to be included in routine immunization schedules, typically starting around six weeks of age.
Benefits and effectiveness
  • Prevents severe disease:
The vaccine is highly effective at preventing severe rotavirus disease and diarrhea. About 9 out of 10 vaccinated children are protected from severe disease, and about 7 out of 10 are protected from any severity of rotavirus disease.
  • Reduces hospitalizations:
It drastically lowers the need for hospitalization, with a 94% to 96% reduction in hospitalizations among vaccinated children.
  • Lowers mortality:
It plays a significant role in reducing deaths caused by severe diarrhea in children.
  • Provides herd immunity:
Vaccination can also offer a herd effect, indirectly protecting older, unvaccinated children.
Safety and side effects
  • Generally safe:
The vaccine has been extensively tested and is considered safe and well-tolerated by the vast majority of infants.
  • Potential side effects:
As with any medicine, there can be mild side effects that typically resolve on their own.
  • There is a very low risk of intussusception (a type of intestinal blockage) following vaccination, particularly after the first dose.
How it is administered
  • Oral vaccine:
It is given orally, usually as drops or a squeezable tube, and not with a needle.
  • Routine schedule:
It is typically administered as part of the routine infant immunization schedule, with the first dose recommended around 6 weeks of age and subsequent doses to follow according to the specific vaccine schedule.
Important considerations
  • Not full protection:
Vaccinated children may still get sick from rotavirus, but their illness is likely to be much less severe than if they had not been vaccinated.
  • Complementary measures:
The vaccine should be part of a comprehensive strategy to control diarrheal diseases, which also includes good hygiene like handwashing, safe water, and prompt treatment for diarrhea.
