Measles and rubella are distinct viral diseases that are often preventable with the same vaccine, the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) shot. Measles (rubeola) is typically more severe, causing symptoms like a high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic rash that starts on the face. Rubella, or German measles, is generally milder for children and adults but is particularly dangerous for pregnant women due to the risk of severe birth defects in their unborn child. Measles Cause: A virus called a paramyxovirus. Symptoms: High fever Cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes Small white spots inside the cheeks (Koplik spots) A rash that starts on the face and spreads downward Complications: Can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, deafness, and blindness. Treatment: Managing symptoms and preventing complications. Rubella Cause: A different virus, Rubivirus. Symptoms: Low-grade fever Sore throat A rash that starts on the face and spreads Complications: For pregnant women: Can cause miscarriage, birth defects (such as hearing deficiency, heart defects, and eye problems), or lifelong disabilities in the baby. For others: Usually mild, but can sometimes lead to complications like encephalitis or a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia). Treatment: Managing symptoms. Prevention The MMR vaccine is the most effective way to prevent both measles and rubella. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are recommended for lifelong protection. The first dose is typically given between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second dose between 4 and 6 years of age. For those who are not immune, avoiding contact with infected individuals is crucial, especially for pregnant women. Anyone who is not immune and may have been exposed should talk to a healthcare provider about post-exposure prophylaxis. Read more
