A vaginal examination is a medical procedure used to assess a woman's reproductive organs. The examination is also known as a pelvic exam or internal exam.
Purpose
  • Checking sexual and reproductive health: The exam is used to look for signs of ovarian cysts, sexually transmitted infections, uterine growths, and early-stage cancer.
  • Diagnosing a medical condition: It can help determine the cause of symptoms such as pelvic pain, unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, skin changes, or pain during intercourse.
  • Assessing progress during childbirth: In obstetrics, it is used to check the dilation of the cervix and the position and descent of the fetus during labor.
  • Cervical cancer screening: A Pap test, which screens for cervical cancer, is often performed during a pelvic exam.
Procedure
A complete vaginal exam typically includes several parts:
  • External visual exam: A visual inspection of the vulva and external genitals for any unusual signs like sores, swelling, or irritation.
  • Internal visual exam (speculum exam): A speculum, a duck-billed instrument, is inserted into the vagina to hold the walls open. This allows the doctor to view the vagina and cervix.
  • Bimanual exam: With one or two lubricated, gloved fingers in the vagina, the doctor presses gently on the lower abdomen with the other hand. This allows them to feel the uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic organs.
  • Rectovaginal exam: Sometimes, a finger is also inserted into the rectum to check for masses or tenderness
