An STI is a sexually transmitted infection, previously known as a sexually transmitted disease (STD). These are infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites that are transmitted through sexual contact, including anal, vaginal, and oral sex. 
Common types of STIs
STIs range from common and curable bacterial infections to lifelong viral infections. 
Curable STIs
  • Chlamydia: One of the most common STIs, it is easily treated but can cause infertility if left untreated.
  • Gonorrhea: A common infection of the genitals, rectum, and throat. Untreated gonorrhea can increase the risk of HIV transmission.
  • Syphilis: This infection can cause serious problems if not treated but is simple to cure with the right medication.
  • Trichomoniasis: A common parasitic infection. 
Treatable (not curable) STIs 
  • Genital Herpes: A common viral STI that can be managed with treatment, though there is no cure.
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV): The most common STI in the U.S. It can cause genital warts and certain cancers, but a vaccine is available to prevent it.
  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus): A viral infection that can lead to AIDS if untreated. It can be managed with medication. 
Symptoms
Many STIs have no noticeable symptoms, so you can have an infection and not know it. The only way to be certain of your status is to get tested.
Common symptoms, when present, can include: 
  • Pain, burning, or itching while urinating.
  • Changes in vaginal or penile discharge (thickness, color, odor).
  • Sores, bumps, blisters, or rashes on or around the genitals, anus, or mouth.
  • Pain during sex.
  • Itching or tingling on or around the genitals.
  • Fever and fatigue. 
Transmission
STIs are primarily spread through sexual contact, but some can also be transmitted in other ways. 
  • Sexual activity: This includes anal, vaginal, and oral sex, as well as genital skin-to-skin contact. Ejaculation does not need to occur for transmission.
  • Mother-to-child: Some STIs can be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.
  • Blood and needles: Some infections, like HIV and hepatitis B, can be transmitted through sharing contaminated needles.
