Jadelle is a long-acting reversible contraceptive implant that consists of two thin rods inserted under the skin of the upper arm to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. It works by releasing the hormone levonorgestrel, which stops ovulation and thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. The procedure is quick and is performed by a healthcare professional, and the implant can be removed at any time if desired.
How it works
  • Hormone release:
The two rods contain levonorgestrel, a progestin, which is released slowly and continuously into the body.
  • Contraceptive effect:
Jadelle prevents pregnancy by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg each month and by making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg through thickening cervical mucus.
  • Duration:
The implant is effective for up to five years, though it may need to be replaced sooner for individuals who weigh over 60 kg.
Insertion and removal
  • Insertion:
A minor surgical procedure is performed to insert the two rods just beneath the skin of the upper arm, usually under a local anesthetic.
  • Protection:
Immediate protection is provided if inserted during the first five days of a menstrual cycle. If inserted at another time, a backup contraceptive method like a condom is needed for the first seven days.
  • Removal:
The implant can be removed by a healthcare professional at any time, and fertility will resume after removal.
Who can use it
  • Generally for women: Jadelle is intended for women who wish to prevent pregnancy for an extended period.
  • Contraindications: It is not recommended for those who are pregnant, have certain liver conditions, have a history of blood clots, or have a suspected or diagnosed cancer of the breast or lining of the womb.
  • Adolescents: It is not indicated for use before the first menstrual period (menarche).
