Depo-Provera is a hormonal birth control injection that prevents pregnancy for up to three months per shot. It is also known by its generic name, medroxyprogesterone acetate, or simply as "the Depo shot". 
How it works
The progestin hormone in Depo-Provera works to prevent pregnancy in three main ways: 
  • Stops ovulation: It prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg.
  • Thickens cervical mucus: The thickened mucus at the cervix blocks sperm from entering the uterus.
  • Thins the uterine lining: This makes it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant. 
Effectiveness
When used correctly, Depo-Provera is one of the most effective birth control methods. 
  • Perfect use: With no missed shots, it is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
  • Typical use: The average effectiveness is about 96%, accounting for users who may be late for a shot. 
Administration
Depo-Provera is given as an injection, usually in the arm or buttocks. 
  • Schedule: A new injection is required every 12 to 13 weeks (about every 3 months) to remain protected from pregnancy.
  • At-home option: Some versions can be self-injected at home after training from a healthcare provider. 
Common side effects
Side effects are common, especially in the first year of use. 
  • Irregular bleeding: This is the most common side effect and can include spotting or bleeding between periods. About half of users stop having periods completely after a year of use, which is not harmful.
  • Weight gain: Weight gain is often reported by users and may be related to an increased appetite.
  • Mood changes: These can include depression, anxiety, and nervousness.
  • Headaches and dizziness.
  • Decreased sex drive.
