HIV testing is the only way to confirm a person's HIV status, and it is a critical step for both personal health and public safety. Modern testing methods are highly accurate, and getting an early diagnosis allows for immediate access to treatment, which can lead to a long and healthy life.
Types of HIV tests
Different tests detect HIV at different times after exposure, a period known as the "window period".
  • Antigen/Antibody Tests: These are the most common HIV tests in the United States and look for both HIV antigens (p24) and antibodies in the blood.
    • Lab tests (blood draw from a vein) can detect HIV 18–45 days after exposure.
    • Rapid tests (finger prick) have a wider window period of 18–90 days.
  • Antibody Tests: These tests check for HIV antibodies in blood or oral fluid.
    • They are less accurate for detecting recent infections, with a window period of 23–90 days.
    • Many rapid tests and at-home self-tests are antibody tests.
  • Nucleic Acid Tests (NATs): These tests look for the actual HIV virus in the blood.
    • NATs have the shortest window period, typically detecting HIV 10–33 days after exposure.
    • They are more expensive and not used for routine screening, but they may be used after a high-risk exposure.
Where to get tested
You have several options for getting an HIV test, including:
  • Healthcare provider's office or lab: A healthcare professional will take a blood or oral fluid sample.
  • Community health centers: Many offer free or low-cost HIV testing and counseling.
  • At-home tests: You can buy a self-test at a pharmacy or online and perform it privately. The OraQuick In-Home HIV Test is one common brand.
  • AHF Kenya: Offers free and confidential rapid HIV and STI testing, as well as counseling, at its wellness centers in Nairobi and other locations.
  • NASCOP VCT: A Ministry of Health-regulated testing site in Nairobi.
Preparing for the test
No special preparation is needed for most HIV tests. For oral fluid tests, you may need to avoid eating, drinking, or using mouthwash for 30 minutes before the test. It is always helpful to write down any questions you may have in advance.
Understanding your results
  • Negative result: A negative result is accurate if you were tested after the window period for your test type and had no potential HIV exposure since then. A retest may be needed if you had a recent exposure.
  • Positive result: A positive result from a rapid test requires a follow-up test from a healthcare provider to confirm. If the result is confirmed, it means you have HIV, and you should begin antiretroviral therapy (ART) as soon as possible.
  • Anonymous or confidential testing: Testing can be anonymous (your name is not attached) or confidential (your results are part of your medical record but protected by privacy laws).
If you test positive
An HIV diagnosis is no longer a death sentence. With modern treatment (ART), people with HIV can live long, healthy lives and prevent transmitting the virus to others. An undetectable viral load, achieved by consistently taking medication, means you cannot transmit HIV through sex. Your healthcare provider will help you create a treatment plan, which may include follow-up tests like a CD4 count and viral load test.
