Male circumcision
A common and ancient surgical procedure, male circumcision is performed for various reasons and on males of all ages.
Reasons for circumcision
  • Religious and cultural traditions: This is one of the most common motivations worldwide. The practice is nearly universal in Judaism and Islam, often as a covenant with God or for purification. It is also part of a rite of passage to adulthood in many African societies.
  • Medical necessity: Circumcision may be recommended to treat conditions such as:
    • Phimosis: A condition where the foreskin is too tight to be retracted.
    • Balanitis: Swelling of the foreskin.
    • Paraphimosis: A medical emergency where a retracted foreskin cannot be returned to its normal position.
  • Preventative health benefits: A 2012 policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that the health benefits of neonatal male circumcision outweigh the risks. These benefits include a reduced risk of:
    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in infants.
    • Penile cancer (a rare condition).
    • Some sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including a 40–60% reduction in female-to-male HIV transmission in high-risk regions.
    • Human papillomavirus (HPV) and herpes simplex virus type 2 transmission.
  • Personal preference: Some individuals choose circumcision for aesthetic or hygiene-related reasons.
The procedure
  • Newborns: The procedure is quick, typically performed within the first few days of life using a clamp or ring device to control bleeding. Local anesthesia is used to minimize pain.
  • Older children and adults: The procedure is more complex and requires general or regional anesthesia. It is often performed by a urologist and involves cutting and stitching the skin.
  • Recovery: Healing takes about 7–10 days for newborns and up to 3 weeks for adults. Pain, swelling, and bruising are common after the procedure.
